Supporting Western North Carolina After Hurricane Helene

At Able&Co., the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina has deeply resonated with us. For our team, this isn’t just a news story — it’s personal. This beautiful region, with its rolling mountains, small-town charm, thriving arts scene, and vibrant communities, holds a special place in our hearts. Many of our team members have spent time in the area, building connections, and experiencing its warmth and resilience firsthand. Seeing the impact of this disaster galvanized us to take action in support of the region we hold so dear.

This year, our Festive Fables holiday campaign has a major component focused on giving the gift of hope and rebuilding. We rallied our resources and invited our community to join us in supporting initiatives operating relief efforts in Western North Carolina and bringing light to those in need. Discover how and why we channeled the spirit of giving to uplift these resilient communities.

Western North Carolina Is Worth Rebuilding

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has left Western North Carolina grappling with unparalleled challenges. The storm devastated the region, leaving approximately 100,000 residents without running water due to damage to critical infrastructure like the North Fork Reservoir and water treatment facilities. Duke Energy restored power to over a million customers in North Carolina by October 1, but as of mid-October, over 11,000 remained in the dark.

In Asheville alone, floodwaters from the French Broad River crested at a record-breaking 24.67 feet, inundating 80% of the River Arts District and leaving hundreds of artists and studios in ruins. Across the region, the volume of debris from the storm totals over 10 million cubic yards. The economic toll on roads, bridges and infrastructure is estimated to be in the billions. This level of destruction has shaken the heart of Western North Carolina’s economy, known for its vibrant arts scene, small businesses and tourism-driven revenue.

Amidst the holiday season, our thoughts are with the families and businesses working to rebuild what was lost. Western North Carolina’s charm lies in its local organizations, thriving art scenes and close-knit communities. It’s imperative that recovery efforts focus on restoring that unique spirit. So we hope to see small businesses, craftsmen and community leaders across the mountains continue to lead this rebuilding process. With time and support, these areas can flourish once again and preserve their character and culture.

A Personal Connection to Western North Carolina

The Able&Co. Team is filled with people who have strong roots in the mountain region of the state

For Lindsay Stoker, our Operations Manager, Western North Carolina is where her story began. “Growing up there gave me a true appreciation for the region’s resilience and the warmth of its people,” she shares. “Seeing the damage from Hurricane Helene is heartbreaking, but I know the spirit of these communities is unshakable.”

Copywriter and Content Creator Daniel Nuttall, an Appalachian State University alumnus, spent formative years in Boone, surrounded by the stunning landscapes and welcoming atmosphere. “The mountains of Western NC were my home away from home,” Daniel reflects. “I owe so much to that community, and I’m determined to do whatever I can to help it recover.”

President and Chief Growth Officer Jenny Taylor’s ties to Western North Carolina run deep. With family rooted in the area, frequent visits to Asheville and a second home in Banner Elk, Jenny shares, “These places are like my second home. The thought of their struggles is devastating, but I have faith in their ability to recover with the right support.”

Lending A Hand

As part of our holiday campaign, Able&Co. has continued to support organizations making a real difference in Western North Carolina. Through financial contributions and participation in our campaign, we’ve worked to help families, individuals and even animals during this time of need.

Manna FoodBank, a key partner in our campaign, continues its tireless work to fight food insecurity in the region, ensuring that no one goes without a meal. We also lent support to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, helping them recover from storm damage so they can return to their vital mission of caring for vulnerable animals and connecting pets with loving homes.

If you would like to continue to participate in our efforts to support Western North Carolina, you can visit our holiday campaign website to learn more, and share one of our Fab Libs, or you can make a direct financial contribution as part of our ongoing collaboration with O.C. Taylor, to provide essential supplies to families in need. Donations can be made via Venmo to @Brent-Taylor-82 labeled “Western NC Holiday Drive.”

Stay tuned to our holiday campaign, after the holidays we will share the sum of our giving impact!
